If you have one partition only with XP on it as I explained, you run the risk of overwriting important files if you partition it, you could try Partition Magic or similar programmes if you wish they can do it if you want to purchase software.....
If you decide to go the other route and recreate the partition then yes you will have to do the boot from disk steps again. Obviously you have some idea of the size of the partitions you want so create your XP partition as the size you desire it (during the format stage you will be asked to decide partition size, the alterable numerals will be highlighted, enter your prefered XP partition size there) and install XP.
Once XP is installed you can then partition the remainder of the drive from within windows via Disk management. Right click "My Computer" > select manage > then in the folder tree on the left side select disk management, right click on the unpartitioned space > select new partition then follow the wizard.
