Wireless connection works, wired connection doesn't

I have a wireless network card in my notebook, which also has a built in 10/100 network port. I have been using the wireless connection without a problem for general network and internet share (except for printer setup noted in another post), but tried using direct cable connection for increased connection speed. When I disable the wireless and enable the cabled connection, I lose network connection. Status of the cabled LAN shows a connection with packets sent, but no packets received.

-intel wireless card with d-link access point connected to d-link router
-d-link router with cable modem connection and direct connection to desktop running Win98 SE

This cable connection works with a differenct laptop (Win98 SE), but I can't seem to make a connection with the Win XP notebook.

Does this sound familar to anyone? Any suggestions on how to make the network connection work?

Thanks.
