A combo drive usually means a CDRW/DVD-ROM. That is, it reads and writes CDs, for DVDs it's read only. As DVDRWs have gotten so cheap, combo drives are disappearing. Hardly any good reason anymore not to get a DVDRW regardless. And yes, they do both CDs and DVDs. Nearly all are now dual-format, DVD +/-R, RW.
