Having the same problem. I unplugged my headphones and then plugged them back in later and boom, the sound card has mysteriously disappeared. There's no record of a sound card anywhere, not in the Belarc or in the general device manager, just codecs. It's an onboard soundcard, I checked, and it was working just fine earlier today. I updated the drivers for my modem, chipset, and I tried the RealTec ALC driver update but nothing works. I don't really know a lot about computers or BIOS or anything so I haven't really checked there...
Here's the specs from Belarc.

If I got a separate sound card, would that override the onboard so I'd have sound again? Can this problem be fixed? Is my motherboard just too old and dying? What can I do?
