Well, the KB fix didn't do it, but reinstalling windows was a step I was unwilling to take.
The ultimate fix ended up being searching the registry for "cd", "easy", and "roxio". There were a lot of entries (delete all with any reference to the roxio programs), but I think the prime suspect was one which existed with "easy" in its name. That one pointed to one of the files the KB noted to delete and "unreference" from the registry. Problem was that it was overruling the fix's edit.
Deleted all the additional garbage and the drive fired up beautifully.
Now, why couldn't the KB have included this info? I shudder to think how many users reformatted/reinstalled the OS and ALL their software, when in the end a ten minute fix (on TOP of the KB) was all it took...
