You could try a "live CD" version - that will check your connection to the web......until you provide your email details they won't work..but I recall that Gnome (desktop) "Live" did reach the internet for browsing. Ububtu also ships with a live CD - whilst there are speed issues it does run without that tedious install process.

I am assuming the connection was OK under windows and that your modem isn't a "windows modem" - ie one that needs win to operate the internals. These were popular in the early days of "dial-up".

My Ubuntu loading was 5.04 and later 5.10 - as I recall both worked OK on the internet (and e-mail when details were supplied).
I don't use Linux anymore as it won't support my Lexmark printer; nor Java, .pdf ......and I don't have any more time for it ......until these issues are make a "click" away.
The Ubuntu forum can be a bit patchy, but they are well-intentioned, I think.
