Last time I spoke to a Packard Bell support technician regarding a suspected failing hard disk on my son's PC, he told me to run FORMAT with a couple of switches (can't remember which), and if the message "repairing bad clusters" appeared more than three times they (packard bell) took that as evidence that the disk was in a state of imminent failure. Sure enough, that message appeared at least ten times and PB replaced it as it was less than 3 years old (a maxtor, so no surprises there).
