hi I have read through this and I have a very similar problem, my sound stopped working as described in the first post, but the day before I had a problem with viruses (I clicked the wrong link and hey presto, boom viruses everywhere, lol), I think I have cleared them all up but my sound still doesn’t work, I have tried that removing sound card thing, but it's inbuilt with the mother board, I think.
