Cable modem

I have a standard cable modem which is connected to my pc via USB.

When I plug it into my pc I get a network connection icon in system tray and everything is fine, ie. I am connected to the internet.

As well as a usb port, the cable modem has also got a standard network port. I have 2 questions.

1) I have tried pluging a standard network cable direct from my pc to the cable modem and nothing happens...no internet. Does this mean I have to get a hub, and plug one cable from the hub to the laptop and another from the hub to the modem?

2) How can I make this wireless by pluging a standard wireless access point into the network port? What setting would I give the Wireless access point...I have choices on the one I have:

a) Access point
b) Access point client
c) Wireless bridge
d) Wireless bridge-point to multipoint

..for b it asks me for Remote AP MAc address & for c it asks me for Remote Bridge Mac address

If anyone has one of these modems and has set up a wireless network before please help. The modem is a motorolla surfboard.

Many thanks
