You dont say if your OS is Wiin98SE - so if it's the earlier Win98, there may an issue with the size of a new HDD. Currently I can't find anything smaller than 40G - but Win98SE will cope OK with 120G but not 160G which are more common.

Furthermore I have no experience of "image" - and think that copying individual files is "probably" a better long-term bet, since you can repeat any folders, or files at will. As Oldtimer suggests, a new HDD is a better back-up than relying on a removed drive. However, I'd be inclined to run it in for a few weeks to be sure it's OK, giving it some time to warm up etc so you are reasonably confident its in 100% good condition.

My own back-ups are done to CD and then groups of them to DVD. Thus at least two optical and one HDD copy exists.
A long-term requirement is a fascinating discussion-point.....which few really consider....old text files for example are difficult to read once early Windows ( or GEM - remember that?) fonts are no longer available and I have experienced the issue of printers being changes to the point where (soo) it will be impossible to recover the hard-copy.
Regards.........let us know how it pans out.
