When I format and load a fresh install of XP pro but before I install any drivers, if I look in device drivers through control panel there is a yellow warning flag alongside 'multimedia audio device' with no reference to any specific soundcard. Then if I click update driver and point to the AC97 driver I had before which was working fine when it installs I get the code 10 error.

I have since tried about 10 different versions of the AC97 WDM codec combo driver which I have acquired from the internet but every one gives code 10
I even tried in desperation to load a realtek ac97 driver but had same response code 10

If this was a tower I could easily just buy and install a new soundcard and driver but being a notebook that option is not applicable

Get Everest http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...-Edition.shtml

post the My Computer/Summary section, see if it gives a motherboard, but I suspect that the sound is disabled in the BIOS. That's what happened to me on my nephews comp. The problem with an OEM BIOS is that sections are removed so it can be difficult to alter. Post the report and see what it gives

Cheers
