Just got this computer and can't figure out why my audio drivers don't want to install, the setup fails in the beginning and when i try to install the SoundMAX ADI1988 Audio Driver from the motherboard CD it says (roughly translated, finnish windows), "HD Audio controller is needed, but it couldn't be found from the system".

Here's what my winamp gave for the error message: "Bad DirecSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration. Error code: 88780078. (Well obviously there ain't no drivers but this kinda gave me hope that the audio device in the motherboard might not be broken and the problem could possibly be solved with some file.)

In BIOS i have Onboard devices-> HD audio controller Enabled
Front panel support type is set to AC97 (other option is HD AUDIO)

I went to the manufactorers site, asus.com (should be intel instead?) and set motherboard/Socked775/P5B, it wasn't this file: SoundMAX Audio Driver v5.10.01.4530 for Windows XP(WHQL) (version 5.10.01.4530). I tried to install this and it just gave me the same crap as the motherboard CD did, setup fails and "HD Audio controller is needed, but it couldn't be found from the system".

When i go to My computer device control i have Other devices -> PCI Device yellow.

Computer info, Everest:
Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600
Motherboard: Asus P5B (3 PCI, 3 PCI-E x1, 1 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR2 DIMM, Audio, Gigabit LAN)
Chipset: Intel Broadwater P965
Bios: AMI (09/06/06)
Soundcard: Analog Devices AD1988 @ Intel 82801HB ICH8 - High Definition Audio Controller [B-0]

This is the info from the pc-store of the motherboard: ASUS-P5B-Intel-LGA775-Core2
ADI 8-channel HD Audio

If you need more info let me know.

Edit: Also downloaded belarc and it doesn't give any info of the audio, multimedia -> none detected.

The PCI device could be a sound card installed, are your Radio jacks low down the tower in an expansion slot, if they are then you have a sound card installed, if higher up the tower near mouse and keyboard then onboard, if they are onboard go here th Asus http://support.asus.com.tw/download/...Language=en-us

first on the Utilities TAB scroll to the Intel Chipset Update Programe and install then RESTART your comp.

Then install the audio driver again

Hope this helps
