Did you find a solution the same thing happened to me yesterday. I went in to change to diagnostic startup and now I can't get back to normal startup. I select normal startup but it will not activate some services like my wireless adapter and norton. Thanks

Well when I got to my desktop, the Windows XP color scheme and theme was gone and I was stuck with the classic version. Also I couldn't use programs such as Norton or My firewall (Symantec). It wouldn't let me use System Restore or go to the 'System' panel.
So I go back into MSCONFIG and switch it to Normal. Then the same thing. Right now I have it on Selective Startup and I STILL have the same problems. By the way, Selective Startup was the default when I first went into MSCONFIG today.
I don't know what to do, so I've come here in search of help.
