Is this HDD a temporary exercise? - for there is nothing to stop using an external drivee (ie loose) and connecting it to the IDE-cable (and power) keeping the reds together. The OS will see this as an internal drive, but we know different! Not easy if it's a notebook, but u don't say.
This has worked for me transferring/saving photo-files from Win95 to Win98SE......it's a drive and I just slip off the PC case..
However, if you want to use a sleek USB device - I think there may be an issue over USB....does yr OS+Motherboard support USB (doesn't matter if it version 1.1 or v2 - only speed is affected. Best to try out some usb-device to see if it's OK - a mouse, or camera-memory reader perhaps, both are cheap enough.
You don't say why you are fixed with Win98. I presume it's an old PC that isn't worth updating and associated risks to yr data.
Hope that gives an insight; we just need to know more.
