Thanks Vercetti for the original registry fix for this, it worked for me.
The corruption happened to me right after updating to iTunes 7. After I did the suggested registry fix and then re-opened iTunes, iTunes gave an error talking about how its registry settings have been modified. iTunes is now unable to burn CDs.
iTunes appears to be a system resource-monpolizing piece of software that doesn't like other things trying to access those same resources. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to resolve these iTunes/CD-DVD drive conflicts?
I went so far as installing a application virtualization program called "SVS" from Altiris that puts various programs in "layers" where they aren't actually hard installed into the registry, but instead connections into the registry are proxied and can be turned off when the program is not in use. That solved the above problem but then iTunes didn't seem to get along with SVS too well. Microsoft just acquired some technology (Softricity) that in theory does what SVS does and at some point this will be in the operating system, but not for at least 3 years.
I can't imagine I am the only one having this issue.
