what im looking for is basically a new desktop. the windows desktop is fine but i want something that will only change when i want it to.

you could say im looking for any number of alternatives:

a new file browser that with minimal (ideally only an address bar) that i can have open constantly

a program that runs an artificial desktop

or anything else that you might think or know of
