Windows updates have caused problems on some systems, regardless of which version of Windows, for quite a while. There are so many variables among systems it would be surprising if a Windows update didn't cause some headaches on some systems.
Remember all the crashes when XP's SP1 came out? Those who didn't bother to follow Microsoft's advice on how to prepare Windows before installing a major overhaul like SP1 (and later, SP2) experienced major problems.
Just take a look at any computer help forum and you'll see plenty of posts in the XP forum (not so many in the Win9x forums since MS no longer pushes updates to those versions) about "I installed an update and now it won't boot (or only boots in Safe Mode or won't fill in the blank)."
I haven't had any problems with the updates I've installed on Vista.
