No Sound After Repairing/Reinstalling XP
Hi to all who read this,
Like many others who post here, I have a 'no sound' problem after reinstalling XP.
I'm running a Dell Dimension 4700 with XP Home Edition. Recently - possibly due to an overheating problem - my system gave me a BSOD. Went into safe mode and dl SpeedFan - main drive was at 61C and secondary drive was at 55 C. Then system crashed completely and couldn't even access safe mode. Reconnected to a second old IBM for a week while trying to reboot my Dell.
Finally reinstalled/repaired XP in my Dell (along with all drivers from vendor CDs) and managed to save most of my data. [Btw, the 'repaired XP' is in a C:Windows folder named 'Rebuilt' which was an option presented during the repair/reinstall. The old corrupted XP is still on my system - but I've been advised not to delete it.] I also cleaned out the mobo and fans w/compressed air, opened side panel and temp is now running at about 54C and 44C. The tower seems cooler to the touch.
Everything seems to work fine now but I still have no sound. Checked the connections in back of the tower. I think they're OK but I'm not sure.
I've run dxdiag and can post it here if you like.
Can you please advise me?
I'm a semi-retired senior but I've usually been able to troubleshoot most of my pc problems successfully by asking friends, relatives, or on the forums.
Thanks for your time and help.

ps. I just switched the speaker cable port in the back and got sound - but with lots of static and sounding very muffled and faraway. Could I have just misconnected the speakers?
pss. My sound card info is as follows:
Driver Provider: Creative
Driver Date 6-9-2004
Driver Version 5.12.1.315
Digital Signer: MS Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher
