no sound

i have no sound, when i try to play music on windows media player i get the message 'Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.'
my computer is about 5 years old and it just stopped working one day, and the system isn't recognising any speakers i plug in.
please help i really want my sound back.
