multimedia audio controller vs m-audio soundcard

similiar question to the other multimedia thread that was posted.
i rebuilt my computer last week (new motherboard, RAM, CPU and graphics card) and left my 'm-audio audiophile 2496' soundcard in place. i continued to use the computer ok-ish, using the existing windows xp, with sound as usual.
now i've re-installed my operating system (windows xp professional) and no longer have any sound. i keep being prompted to install drivers for 'multimedia audio controller' (The same one described by ToraNC, with the yellow question mark)
i've tried to re-install my m-audio soundcard but the new hardware wizard can't see it, and only seems to recognize the multimedia device as new hardware.
i've tried to manually add the new hardware but i'm only given a few manufacturer options and m-audio isn't one of them.
I've removed it completely and used the computer without it, then put it in again, desperately hoping it prompts me to install the m-audio drivers. i put the driver CD in but it says that it isn't relevant.
the motherboard is a winfast Foxconn K8T890M2AA.
please please help me someone
