For windows 2000 networking connections.
you must create the username you want to use on the 2000 Machines.
For Example, If your info on the laptop is
Username : Name
Password : password
You must create exactly the same user on the 2000 Machine.
We have many of these questions while trying to do file sharing from our server at LAN Events. But it's easily solved by creating a user.

As for Home edition, I really suggest you stick with the Pro, Home edition is very buggy for networking. But if you have Windows 2000 Pro, then all the better.
