Reduce the "eye candy" effects. It will effect an improvement. Not much, but you may be able to at least have look.
Take no notice of Vistas performance index thing. It is meaningless.

You know, you can have the vista effects on XP too. 3D desktop switching etc. It's not just a Vista thing:

Other than the "look and feel" of Vista the software does not give you much more, which is good because otherwise you would have to shell out a King's ransom for the hardware upgrades require. This does require a graphics card, but not the super-dooper thing that Vista needs.
