Slow computer

I have several problems with my computer. It takes forever to start up and once it does applications take forever to load. At first I thought it was my hard drive so I took the hard drive of another computer in the house (running windows xp) and noticed that the startup was just as slow connected to my computer but started up fine on its own. So I connected my hard drive to this other computer and found that my windows vista booted up fine in normal speed and my applications would start normally.

I know that it cannot be the hard drive, as it works fine on this computer but I cannot figure out what is wrong. I have tried removing and reinserting the ram. I checked the CMOS but everything seemed to be fine and I even removed the CMOS battery to reset it but still nothing. At times once windows boots up the programs start just fine but even five minutes after that the same programs will take years to load.

The problem seemed to arise after I was running low on disk space and the pop up notification came out to tell me but I have cleared plenty of space and have somewhere around 15-20gb free.

Anyone have any idea what it could even possibly be? Thanks for any help.
