Your download speed of 4-5 kb/sec is normal for a 56k dial-up modem. The 56k means 56 kilobits (not kilobytes). 8 kilobits=1 kilobyte. So if you divide 56 by 8 you get 7 kilobytes/sec. Since you never get 100% performance over a telephone line, the best you can expect is around 5 kilobytes/sec.

Try and borrow a PC connected to a broadband line if you can, as some of these downloads are quite large.
