thank you so much for your help Barbara..
I'm going to post this in NotebookReview.com to help others that also format a gateway 3550gz!
thanks again for all the help!
Edit: One more thing, since you seem to be really good at these things.
I recently purchased a 160gb seagate harddrive, which was an upgrade from my old 60gb. My computer only recognizes 131gb of my 160gb harddrive. I've done some research and talked to the gateway tech support for about 1 hr and neither of us could find an Bios update for the phoneix bios. I've read that I need to do some 48 bit lba (logical block addressing) thing. Anyhow, I guess I need an update for my bios correct? Gateway doesn't provide one for my system.
Do you have any idea where I can find a bios update for this? Or if Gateway never made one am I simply out of luck?
thanks!!

You need the BIOS update that goes with the motherboard, and belarc and everest can't crack the boards, have a word here

I have a 250GB Sata but only 238GB registers, this may be due the fact that XP uses about 12% of the drive for System Restore Points.
