Unhappy Hard Drive won't let me install XP that has Vista

This is a computer I've had a lot of problems with, Vista is entirely bugged and glitchy in so many ways I don't wanna keep it. I got this computer from Gateway, it has a duo processor @ 1.8 GHz to a total of 3.6 Gigahertz, and 1 Gig RAM. Vista has great features but it's performance and quality is very very poor. With vista, you know the usual clicking sound coming from your hard drive when it's opening and loading programs, vista constantly does it, forever, making the hard drive work so hard, there are programs running in the background all the time that you cannot find, programs that try and be compatible with all these programs I installed, it's lame. I have XP on one of my computers but I want my big hard drive right now that has vista on it to install XP. Besides it's twice bigger and faster computer than my other. There is always something new with a problem on vista, I call tech support at best buy and tell me that they never heard of that problem, lol. And I told them, that's because it's VISTA, I also wanted to say it sucks but I didn't, just told them it's hecka bugged. Anyhow, I got this computer back from gateway after 2 weeks of fixing it, when I got it back, they told me that my hard drive crashed and replaced it when I picked up from best buy. Yeah, I wasn't able to get past Windows loading screen and i did everything i could, safe mode, even did changes in the bios, etc. That hard drive brand new crashed 3 months later, 320GB. Now it's fine because it's a new one. I automatically 2 weeks ago, wanted xp on it, so I inserted my wonderful service pack 1 and 2 Windows XP DISK in and when I got to the partitioning part, it didn't, it wouldn't even detect the hard drive, the master hard drive. Some info after i tried came up and here's my summary: You can not take this action or install windows xp on it, please contact your manufacturer and find out why. I was obviously pissed. I was just wondering if I can fix that myself??? I now some friends, a friend that got a degree in computer tech support, he told me that i got screwed over by the company first. I also found out that it has to do with a chip set. I think they programmed my chip set on MY MOTHERBOARD to only be able to have vista. I spent so much money on a full computer I think I'm never going to buy a computer again, I'll build my own. I'm a volunteer @ Free Geek and going into the building program, only difference is that they hate Windows and love Linux. My Question: Does anyone know more information about installing XP on a hard drive and then not being able to? What do I do?

Things I know might help, I was thinking maybe I can put the hard drive in a different computer I have and format it that way or even install xp on it and then switching the hard drive to the other computer it was in first. But before I do anything, I need some feedback.
