I doubt that your motherboard was programmed to reject any OS but Vista mate (though nothing would surprise me).

I assume that you inserted your XP CDROM and booted from that when you tried to install? You can't install an OS over another whilst the first is actually running for obvious reasons thus you must boot from the CDROM containing the OS you wish to install.

Insert your XP CDROM and then turn off and on again. If you don't get an option to "Boot from CD", then enter your BIOS and change the boot order to CDROM first then save and exit.

Your com should boot from the CDROM, you should arrive at the partitioning part and be able to delete/format etc easily from there.
