I think you've been lucky - that he's still a friend. It's bad enough touching our own PC's - - - you know they will never get abck to "As was".
I suspect you can't get updates to Win98 as MS has declared it won't support. Same goes for Win98SE which I've been using for a while on a "limited motherboard" for the same reasons you say.
However, I was not aware that there were any SP's - When I've needed to install I do it clean on a new HDD - ie start afresh to get the reliability of a new drive. Bearing in mind IDE drives are almost obsolete it's worth colelcting a few ( pref identical models, so at worst the circuit-boards can be swapped).
It's a whilse since I had to install my Broadband but I still have the CD, presumably later OS also set-up.

With Linux ( Ubuntu), that was the case and the OS appeared to install just about everything.

I'm thinking of getting another PC but want to get some level of "future-proofing" - have managed to put it off and my latest purchase is a wide-screen LCD so I can move it about the house ( the CRT monitor is too heavy).

If he's a good friend, he'll forget.
