DVD Drive also missing
I also am running Vista Home Premium and having similar problems. Here is all the relevant info:
Watched DVD's on my new laptop for a few days, loaded a DVD one day and got a "can't find disc in drive" message. Looked around and saw that My Computer and Device Manager did not see my drive, only HD was listed. Did a system restore to the system checkpoint from the first time I turned on the computer, drive re-appeared. Loaded another disc, drive gone again. System Restore again, drive back. The third time this happened, system restore did not bring back the drive, and now it seems nothing will. I got online and tried the following fixes, none of which worked:
Regedit deleting upper and lower filters in the pertinent registry key (didn't work)
Deleting a particular Windows update that caused trouble with some DVD drives (didn't work)
Tried putting the computer to sleep and then waking it up again, which some people said worked for them (didn't work)
Tried several System Restores from different points (didn't work)
Finally I got the disc that came with my computer and tried to re-install Vista, which I assume is a boot disc. But the computer wouldn't boot from the DVD drive. The light came on momentarily and I felt the drive whir to life, but then the light went out and Vista booted normally from the hard drive. I re-started the computer and paused at the BIOS, but it also only shows my hard drive, no DVD Drive. The secondary IDE selection is listed as "none". I read in one post that BIOS doesn't physically detect optical drives, but only once. I tried looking for it during the POST but apparently Vista doesn't show a POST at start up.
Okay, I've probably given too much information, but as you can see I really have tried everything that I have been able to find. I know that if I call tech support for my Comp. or Vista they'll probably just take me through the same steps I've already taken, not to mention spending HOURS more on the phone. Are there any computer geniuses out there who can remotely tell me what else to try?
Thank you so much in advance for any replies!
