Wireless network connection

i got a laptop and its the first time i used the built in wireless adaptor and now that i installed sp2 i could use WPA and get online. first thing i notice that different from a usb wireless adaptor is when i click on the wireless network connection on the taskbar and go to view available wireless networks , i see my network at the top and which has a padlock and tells me im connected with WPA but nxt to where it says connected it has a yellow star which says "This network is a preferred network" and i keep getting these same 2 networks keeping popping up in the list and then there gone nxt time i check , are these networks popping up hackers? why does my network say "this network is a preferred network"? is it a invite for other ppl to join? and one more thing i need to know about is when you double click on wireless network connection and go into properties and wireless networks " use windows to configure my wireless network settings" is checked , is it safe that way? i unchecked it to see what happens and it gets rid of my network showing up on the list , which is the best option?
