Ethernet Cable not Working

Hi, i just formatted my hard drive to get rid of vista and to install XP and that went ok. But im having trouble connecting my pc to my router using my ethernet cable. Before when i had vista i just plugged it in and straight away it found the router and i could go on the net But now nothing will come up. I'm currently using a bluetooth usb to conncet to the internet but that is only 54 Mbps and is terrible when i'm trying to do online gaming. I've also tried using a different ethernet cable but that did not work either. So i have absolutely no idea on what to do.
Anyone have any suggestions?
i am running AVG anti virus 7.5, and the anti spyware, and the main windows firewall.
