Question alternative to Windows XP

This is in regards to my 'spare' computer. It's older and doesn't have a lot of memory/hard drive space. 399 MhZ 256 MB RAM and it's a 9.54GB hard drive. I recently put on Windows XP Professional and realized that this wasn't the best choice, however I needed it to add the wireless card and I had it already on hand from my primary computer. I only use this computer to access the internet and check emails (do occassional searchs). (although, I will say I'm not fond of it (winxp) on my primary computer either)

My question, is there anything I can 'downgrade' to inorder to help performance on this unit. I keep getting low disk space error messages. Can I remove any of the little 'extra's" that windows xp might have put on? And how do I do that? Is there another windows platform that I can get relatively cheap and not so much of a memory hog?

Thanks!
