Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

thanks again Barbara, tried both. SigmaTel is showing as my only choice for audio device. Windows audio is also showing as Automatic for the setting.
The weird thing is that I didn't lose audio all at once. first I think I deleted my audio codecs. got those reinstalled and audio worked for Windows mediaplayer and iTunes but not for flashplayer. reinstalled the newest version of flash player and still no audio. After that used computer for a week or so and rebooted and lost all audio. hopefully some of this info m help. thanks, Keith
