I had checked prior the "Audio" settings and there is currently no other choice but "Modem #0 Line Playback". It's as if the board is not recognizing the sound chip.

This machine is a Sony Vaio PCV-RX540
Not sure if the make and model helps........

Also, I'm still a little confused as to how my drive volumes got switched.
Me thinks Sonys recovery discs need a wee bit o'tweeking

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions
