2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver

"The listings under Sounds in Device Manager:
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs
"

Can't do that considering no audio device appears,

I also have on-board sound (I/O if you will) that worked just fine before the system recovery. Now it's as if I removed the chip off the freakin board. YET, drivers present. go figure...

If you read back thru my original post you'll see that I've pretty much tried everything "common" to be the cause of the problem and yet, nada..

You will need to check if audio is [Enabled] in the BIOS, go here to Sony and get the System Reference Guide, it details what to do.

When Sony logo appears press F2 key
the Main screen opens
use arrow key to go to Advanced tab
use arrow key to go to I/O Configuration - press Enter
onboard AC'97 should be set to [Enabled] if not use the + key to change
Press F10 key to save & Exit
y to changes

windows will then load - install the audio if XP does not load it automatically
