As you say the partitions changed look at this from Sony, not your particular problem but as it corrects partitions it may be worth a look

Error: Cannot determine partition settings occurs when performing a system recovery.
Follow this procedure to resolve this error from occurring when performing a system recovery.
1. Turn the computer off.
2. Remove any third-party peripherals added to the computer.
3. Remove any removable media from the computer.
4. Reset the computers BIOS to the default values.
NOTE: Verify the the hard drive is detected in BIOS. If the hard drive is not recognized in BIOS, the hard disk drive is the cause of the error.
NOTE: If using recovery media, only the recovery CD/DVD should be inserted into the computer.
5. Restart the recovery.
