The process would normally run through quickly without interuption.
Perhaps the file system is corrupted?
Download the diagnostic soft from the manufacturer of the HD. Or use a tool like "Spinrite". Even Seagate tools will work. http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/sup...loads/seatools
Or one of the many boot cds that are available.

What happens if you boot from a windows CD?
