Windows XP reinstall problems

My sister in law had a problem on her pc. firstly it started up too slow and i checked all the things needed ie startup programs, run scans etc... and to no avail. then a while after when the computer rebooted she said her login name appeared with the icon to click to login, whereas it was never set like that. windows would just normally login itself. so she clicked her icon to login and as soon as she did that, it would not log her in and instead said loggin out.
so i thought reinstalling would help. so tried to reinstall windows thru the boot from cd. press r to reinstall etc. and it hangs at 37 minutes when says installing devices. i checked the devices and they seem fine.
is there a way i can cancel the installation and try something else? maybe in recovery console. i attached another drive to boot from so i can access the hard drive to backup wat is needed but she doesnt want to format as she is not the sort to sit there reinstalling stuff. so i cant go against her wishes. i just want to get the computer to boot up coz now when i load the drive it says "setup is restarting and cant get out of it.
any help is greatly appreciated.
