Faulty DATA cable and sudden computer restarting

Hi,

I have ordinary IDE hard drive WD 80 GB (Not SATA) connected by ATA data cable some times the computer is suddenly restarted and then the hard drive is defined by the boot screen of the computer with weired text such as _DK_)))))))80 and then windows could not be able to starting.

After I changed the cable it boots successfully after performing disk scan on C partition.

My question is: It is possible, if the data cable is faulty to cause such restarting or I have to think about worth things about the mother board?
