Hi there, I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with a few extras!
All the Icons in my network conections have disappeared plus the search engine for my windows doesn't work nor can I install any programs because it says the windows installer needs to be installed.
I have just recently installed a fresh copy of XP. I had this exact same problem before which caused me to do a few repairs but as it kept happening I decided to do a complete reinstall but STILL this problem is happening. Thankfully I can connect to the internet but I don't like things being wrong, especially as I have spent over a week and a half re-installing and re-re-installing and searching for error solution.
I thought I'd pretty much got things back to normal then I wake up this morning and find the same problem.
I've tried all the solutions listed here and nothing works. Can anyone offer any more explinations? I'm at the end of my tether and exhausted from sitting in front of my machine day in day out for about 11 hours at a time and I don't want to do yet another re-install because it doesn't seem to fix anything!
I'm running windows xp pro with Servicepack 2 on a desktop PC 3.00ghz pentium 4 (I think) 1.5GB Ram!
Thanks to everyone who posted on this thread, the amount of solutions ws amazing but unfortunatly it just didn't work for me!
Please help! I've no hair left from tearing it all out!
