Thankfully there are 1000`s of developers who do it for free and are`not motivated by the buck as are Microsoft,and although Linux doesn`t ship with some things , with the aid of repositories (many of which are university's) once the GPG key has been installed the missing components can be added,i.e mp3 codecs and mpeg2 codecs etc,as well as some of the 100,ooo+ packages at sourceforge.net.3000+ games in development and lots of other things from communication to open office,in both windows and linux platforms and even mac os.
The development in computing isn't restricted to linux,but right across the board as all systems have thier good and bad sides,the best of them with regard to stability and for completeness in regard to applications is Linux as it is in most cases ready to go with everything, secure firewall,office suite and networking capabilities ,etc. which are all GNU licensed and are free. (:^D)
The biggest robbing b*stards in the world are those that make game consoles as when games are developed they are done so on computer,but it is generally the last platform for release,after the xbox,ps1,2,3 etc and yet it is the best platform to play the games on ,talk about money motivated. (:^D)
Bill Gates and Microsoft come a close second in that arena.
