Ubuntu update + Long Term Support.

I have used several versions of Ubuntu, last was 6.06LTS - I understand there is a newer LTS, so would like to update, but I wonder exactly "what is" LTS worth?
The intermediate versions are presumably "OK" - so I'm just wondering if there is any point to LTS, since the next Ubuntu version is "presumsb;y" considered better......

Next, I wonder what happens top all the junk files? When I update my version....does it clean-up all the junk? Windows is well-known to fill-up the HDD with unnecessary files - does Ubuntu have a cleran-up facility, or is it dealt with when undating?
Yes I know Linux is not Win, but "computers" are the common bit..

Thanks in anticipation.
