XP needs 512 megs minimum? Nope. I think you mistake it for Vista.
Xp will run on a P2 with 64 megs of ram. Slow, but it works. I actually use 96 Megs for a speed boost.
A 1gig cpu with 240megs of ram will even work for older gaming. No frustration needed. The spec is still rellevent now.
As I said. Depends what you want to use it for.
Forget the rule of thumb. You use the spec that suits you. Not what people think is the right one to them.
Note: you can buy a C2D that runs at a measly 1.6 Ghz. It's far from slow.
