I finally gave up. I bought a new computer, an HP Pavilion a6528P with sound that works. It was a painful decision, but the whole thing was driving me to distraction. The new machine has a 500gb hard drive and a 3062 mb of memory. It is running Windows Vista.

Thanks for all of your assistance. I felt better during the episode even though we weren't successful.
