Check the manual that came with the mother board so you can check the bios to ensure the sound card is turned on. When I built one of my computers I tried to use the speakers from an older one and they would not work. Not knowing what the specks are on your motherboard I don't know if it requires you to have speakers that have thier own amplifier or not. When I bought amplified speakers it solved my proplem.
