Sndvol32.exe for Dummies lol (I’m one of them).
After much trial and error, because I do not understand some of the technical terminology, this is what worked for me.
Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent it from starting
automatically.
(or simply close the setup window when it starts)
Click
Start, and then click
Run.
In the Open box, type
cmd, and then click OK.
If your computer's CD-ROM drive is drive D, and if the folder that contains the Windows system files is C:\Windows,
then type the following lines at the command prompt:
(Press ENTER after each line):
d:
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ c:windowssystem32sndvol32.exe
*note that there are spaces between cd and i386, expand and sndvol32.ex_, and sndvol32.ex_ and c:
Type
exit to quit the command prompt.
Verify that you can start Volume Control and that the Volume icon is displayed in
the notification area (if you selected this option).
(If you cannot find your XP CD-ROM, I found the file at
http://forums.techguy.org/multimedia...e-missing.html.
Unzip it and extract it to C:\Windows\System32)
If the file extracted but you still cannot start Volume Control:
Open the Control Panel
Add or Remove Programs
“Add New Programs”
Choose “CD or Floppy”
Click “Next”
Browse
My Computer
C:
Windows
System32
(At the bottom of the window, in “Files of Type,” select “All Files”)
Select sndvol32
Open
Then…to put the Volume Control icon on the taskbar, go to:
Control Panel
Sounds and Audio Devices
Volume
(under “Device Volume,” select “Place volume icon in the taskbar”)
Apply.
