Computer info:
Computer Type: ACPI x64-based PC
Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
Motherboard Name: Asus P5B Deluxe (3 PCI, 1 PCI-E x1, 2 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR2 DIMM, Audio, Dual Gigabit LAN, IEEE-1394)
Motherboard Chipset: Intel Broadwater P965
BIOS Type: AMI (12/27/06)
Audio Adapter: Intel 82801HB ICH8 - High Definition Audio Controller [B-0]
My problem seems nearly identical to the one another person in this thread had (Polarbear), same motherboard, same issues.
I can't install SoundMax, it gives me the error: The audio driver files do not support your computer hardware.' I get this both when trying to install from the original cd and from the latest driver gotten from the asus site. (Version v6.10.2.6110)
In my device manager the High Definition Audio Controller shows up under system devices.
As for the bios, same as Polarbear said:
In BIOS i have Onboard devices-> HD audio controller Enabled
Front panel support type is set to AC97 (other option is HD AUDIO)
Sadly his solution was getting Sp2 for windows xp, which is not going to help me. I'd appreciate any help!

try version 4580 http://support.asus.com.tw/download/...Language=en-us
this driver will only work if your audio plugs are on the I/O plate – see example here – click image to focus

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions
