This worked for me....Windows XP

I am by no means a computer expert, but after trying the above advice with no luck I kept trying to find a simple fix. My computer was saying that my sound card was working fine, but the volume and adjustments were greyed out. This is what worked for me:

Control panel

Sounds

Audio

Sound Playback--There is a dropdown that was somehow switched to a modem. I then chose the sound card, clicked apply, then OK. I then clicked the volume tab which was NOT greyed out anymore, then checked the box to put the volume back in the taskbar.

In my case this did the trick and the sound now works perfectly. Hope this fix may help others.
