I'm making my own tower atm...

It has a 3gb hard drive and a 16gb harddrive

My brother keeps insisting on me installing Win2000pro but I want Linux... my workstation will be on a LAN with a router (freesco) that looks like unix anyway, and my hosting server is unix- so why not a workstation as well with Linux?

I have sort of crashed and burned around the cryptic side of some Linux OS... but I want a GUI as well. What's best for me? I'm really a newbie for Linux.

My brother has all the editions of RedHat Linux from 6.0 and up, he has Mandrake, slackware, freeBSD all on CD... what is best?

If I have a browser (I use Opera already), something to run the IMs (MSN messenger, yahoo, ICQ, AIM) like Trillian I suppose and some form of document making program then I'll be fine Also, I have a program for my CD burner - nero5 burning rom with nero 5.5.8.3 - is there a Linux substitute?

I was thinking maybe put both win2000pro and Linux on this tower? I do have a win2000pro disc at home I suppose if Linux isn't what I want and I end up formatting...
