Is there an entry in device manager for IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers?
If not, scan for hardware changes. If none are found and the entry is there, has it got a question mark?.
In any case open the entry and uninstall the subitems. Restart the PC and this will allow windows to redetect the controller and drives. Hopefully sorting your problem.
